Memorial Day: It's a National Holiday, a long weekend that kicks off the summer vacation season. Many of us get the day off. How will you spend your long weekend?

We are suggesting you put aside some of your time this weekend to remember and honor those who died serving this country. If you are able and available, consider joining about a thousand of your neighbors. They will be at Biloxi National Cemetery Saturday morning at 8 o'clock.

Red Cross Gives Tips on Severe Weather Threat  Download Free Tornado App

Mississippi is prone to severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, and the American Red Cross urges residents to take steps now to stay safer when severe weather threatens.
 
“After recent severe weather and tornadoes across several states, this is the time to stop what you’re doing and make sure you and your family are prepared," said Don Stephens, emergency services director. “Create a disaster preparedness plan now before our community is threatened by high winds, hail, lightning and excessive rainfall.”
 

Cancer survivor holding benefit for Vancleave girl battling brain cancer

ST. MARTIN, MS (WLOX)- Natalie Hightower took another walk Monday, and she is draining fluids on her own. Her family is still trying to decide what steps to take after they learned the tumor removed from Natalie's brain last week was cancerous.

Support for the 12 year old Vancleave girl is now spreading to St. Martin and Ocean Springs. One teacher is trying to rally the South Mississippi community to help Natalie's family through this difficult ordeal.

Nearly 2,000 students graduated from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College during the 2012-2013 school year.  The annual commencement ceremony was held on May 9 at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi. 

Jackson Co. chooses representatives for new tourism board

JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX)- Jackson County's Board of Supervisors on Monday appointed three representatives to the new tri-county tourism board: Rich Westfall, Carla Todd and Richard Chenoweth.

The 15 member regional tourism board was created under a bill recently signed by Governor Phil Bryant. It replaces the Harrison County Tourism Commission.

Both Jackson and Hancock counties will have three representatives on the board. Harrison County will have nine members.

Vancleave man rescued after kayak overturns

OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX)- A Vancleave man was rescued around 7 Sunday evening after his kayak overturned.

According to DMR Public Relations Manager Lauren Thompson, DMR received a report about the incident around 6:30 p.m.

Ocean Springs police said the man wasn't too far from shore and was picked up on the Ocean Springs side of the Biloxi-Ocean Springs bridge.

Several agencies including DMR responded to the scene. The man, who was wearing a life jacket was brought back to shore by DMR.

Thompson said the man was uninjured.
