Tourism staff hands out special treat to South Mississippi visitors

BILOXI, MS (WLOX)- Guests arriving in South Mississippi this week will receive an extra warm welcome. Tourism staff members have stationed themselves at several welcome centers to greet visitors. It's part of "National Travel and Tourism Week", but that's not the only reason they're celebrating.

The enticing aroma of fresh popcorn and a huge dose of southern hospitality filled the entrance of the Biloxi Visitors Center on Monday.

"They are smiling, always smiling," commented Pauline Houdebine, who is visiting from France.

Jackson County storm victims seek shelter

JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX)- Jackson County has opened its East Central shelter for storm victims to hunker down until the flood waters recede. Those residents said while they are worried about their homes, they're relieved to have safe place to stay.

Cousins Shirley James and Shirley Lett have more in common than just their first names.  Both women were forced out their Moss Point homes due to rising water.

"I have never seen the water come in like that. The house is full of water," said James about her flooded home.
